Salisbury traffic delays can be pretty awful at times, especially on the Southampton Road (A36). You’ll often see queues forming along Churchill Way, either coming from St Mark’s Roundabout or Exeter Street, heading towards the College Roundabout.
Some motorists turn off of Churchill Way at Kelsey Road, and drive along Rampart Road and Tollgate Road, but they still end up queueing to get onto Southampton Road by the Mercedes showroom.
Once you finally get onto the Southampton Road, the traffic is generally moving very slowly as it heads towards Bourne Way Roundabout, next to Tesco. Once you’ve cleared New Petersfinger Road, everything speeds up and you’ll soon be on the Alderbury Bypass.
Tesco Car Park Traffic Delays
Salisbury’s Tesco Extra is located off of the Bourne Way Roundabout. As you might expect, it can be very busy at times with the car park close to full. During peak periods, when the traffic is heavy, it can take ages time to get back out onto Southampton Road. It’s not unknown to get stuck in Tesco car park for over an hour.
The have recently built a new exit from Tesco and it brings you out onto New Petersfinger Road. You can only turn right out of the car park though, back onto Southampton Road but it might save you some time.

Avoiding Salisbury Traffic Delays
Salisbury traffic delays are so bad that my parents won’t drive here from Southampton anymore. They worry that they’ll get caught in traffic jams at the end of the Alderbury bypass. Where the dual carriageway drops down to a single lane. They would rather catch a train.
Many years ago, there was talk of a bypass for Salisbury. With so much of the surround land now having been built on, who knows.
These days, as I live on the other side of Salisbury, I prefer Amesbury. It’s a nice drive through the Woodford Valley and their Tesco is just as nice.
