I’ve been living in Salisbury UK, a medieval Cathedral City in the south of England, for over 15 years now and have no plans to move away. I used to run a small computer repair business, which I really enjoyed, but am now enjoying an unplanned early retirement.
It’s a fabulous city, although more of a market town, and is a popular tourist destination. The Cathedral is the obvious attraction but you’ll also find some very interesting places to visit close by. Salisbury also seems to be a popular retirement destination with many retirement flats, homes having been built including a popular village.
Living In Salisbury UK – Shopping And Amenities
We have a fabulous range of shops both in the city centre and at various site on the outskirts. If you’re parking a car in the main cap park then you’re likely to walk through an area known as The Maltings. This has a great range of smaller shops as well as a Sainsbury’s on the first floor.
Moving into the city, you’ll find the Old George Mall with it’s main entrances located in the High Street, New Canal and Catherine Street. Here you’ll find well known stores such as Marks And Spencer, Primark, Deichmann, Fat Face, Lakeland and many more. The Old george Mall is open from 8.30am to 5.30pm on week days & Saturday and 10am to 5pm on a Sunday.
The multi story car park is accessed from New Street and the post code is SP1 2PH
For more details, visit the Old George Mall website.
Out Of Town Shops
Out of the centre, off of the Southampton Road (A36), you’ll find The Range, Hobby Craft, Next, DFS, B&M, Currys and more on the Southampton Road retail Park.
A little further, at The Bourne Retail Park, you’ll find Tesco, Lidl, Wickes and Dunelm, to name but a few. B and Q and Matalan can also be found along the Southampton Road. I tend to avoid the area during peak periods and the Salisbury traffic delays can get a bit serious at times.
Visitor Attractions
For a start, you have the The Rifles Berkshire and Wiltshire Museum. This is located in a listed building called The Wardrobe in The Close.
The Salisbury Museum is also in The Close. It has a fabulous collection information about local archaeology which include Stonehenge.
Arundells was the home of Edward Heath, the former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, from 1985 until he passed away in 2005.
Mompesson House, also located in The Close, is a famous 18th-century house that is now owned and maintained by the National Trust.
The Boscombe Down Aviation Collection is another popular attraction. It is located at Hangar 1 Old Sarum Airfield, Old Sarum, Salisbury SP4 6DZ.
Just outside of Salisbury, approximately 8 miles to the north, is Stonehenge. This is maintained by English Heritage and is a very popular tourist attraction. I believe it has a fascinating visitor centre that explains a lot about the history of The Stones.
