Last year we took a trip to Langford Lakes Nature Reserve at Steeple Langford, between Salisbury and Warminster, in South Wiltshire. The reserve is managed by Wiltshire Wildlife Trust and is a very popular destination for wild bird watchers. If you’re keen on photography as a hobby then you’ll get some fantastic shots here.
It’s free to enter the site and refreshments are available at the Kingfisher Café & Gallery. Donations can be left in a wall mounted box at the side of the cafe. This is open from 8am to 4pm on Wednesdays to Sundays.
There is also a Facebook group for the reserve that has over 2000 members. They post some wonderful photos of some of the wildlife so it’s worth looking at https://www.facebook.com/groups/langfordlakes
I believe that coarse fishing is also available but please check for details on the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust website.
You’ll find free parking and the reserve and site is accessible for wheelchairs and pushchairs. There is disabled parking and toilet facilities.
There are some wonderful bird hides available with views across the lakes. We’ve spent quite a lot of time in them, watching the Swans, Ducks, Canada Geese and other wild fowl. Make sure you bring your binoculars with you.
Due to ground nesting birds and livestock, dogs are not allowed into the nature reserve.
A vist to Langford Lakes Nature Reserve, Nr Salisbury
We often visit the reserve as it’s only a short car drive from where we live. We especially like the Canada Geese as they are such characters and can be very vocal at times.
I’m not sure whether it’s a sign of aggression but you will often see the geese head bobbing. It is certainly interesting to watch and we enjoy it a lot.
The last time we visited, whilst walking along the path, we spotted a Goose that was sitting on her nest. I didn’t want to get too close but managed to take a photo that you can see below.
There are also some other facinating sights to be seen during the summer months. Amongst my favourites are the Damselflies and Dragonflies, they are such beautiful insects.

The beauty of having taken early retirement is that I get to visit some wonderful places. I also get time to find some new material for my Blog.
